Western tourists are not often drawn to this rural region, but you will find foreign expats who want to settle in a place with a laid-back vibe and where land is affordable.
Although the region is less developed than other parts of Thailand, Isaan is more than just rice fields – it is a place rich in culture. One general commonality about Isaan people is that they are proud of their roots and are never shy about where they are from.
You will find Isaan people, find Isaan food (papaya salad, larb, grilled chicken, etc.), and hear their dialect and sentimental country music ballads in just about all parts of Thailand. Even though many people leave Isaan for Bangkok for better job prospects, they are never too far from finding a piece of home.
My Isaan friends wear some of the biggest smiles and they love teaching me (or torturing me) with their distinct Isaan vocabulary.
